Conscious Christmas Celebrations: Mindful Foodie Feasts

#MUNIonThis: Does the Christmas season almost inevitably add a few pounds on the scale, and leave you feeling sluggish or bloated after the back-to-back bingeing at parties?

Many of us justify this with reasoning that perhaps this is the only time you get see all your family and friends, particularly those who are in town just for the holidays. So naturally, we would want to feed them as best we can, which in Filipino vernacular would mean presenting them with more food than they can humanly consume, and all the rich, cholesterol- and sugar-filled indulgences imaginable.

With the increasing trend towards a healthier lifestyle, some entrepreneurs are giving us better options to help us celebrate Christmas, enjoying the company of friends and family, over good food, without feeling bad afterwards.

MAIN MEALS

According to Edgy Veggy‘s Denise Celdran, “Christmas parties don’t have to be about overeating and empacho!” Consider adding their “Callos Celdran”, a vegan-friendly callos made with mushrooms (Php990/tray good for 10-12 pax) or their Spinach Mushroom Quiche (Php800/pie), made with organic spinach and mushrooms. Edgy Veggy’s dishes are meat-free, egg-free, preservative-free yet full of flavor and healthy goodness.

BEVERAGES & LOCAL LIQUEUR

Stanford x Shaw Fresh Ginger Ale

A healthier alternative to your standard softdrinks, Stanford x Shaw offers bright and refreshing carbonated ginger ale, which you can spike with a touch of your favorite rum for a celebratory kick!

Their ginger ale is available at Salcedo & Legaspi Markets in Makati (on Saturday and Sunday respectively), or call 0917-5366024 or 7246860 to order.

Manille Liqueur de Calamansi

A delight for calamansi fans (though being quite the calamansi lover, I might argue that they could use a touch more calamansi), Manille Liqueur de Calamansi is easily one of my favorite party / hangout drinks, best enjoyed over lots of ice.

The calamansi rinds were sourced from Oriental Mindoro, through the Tugdaan Mangyan Center for Learning and Development, an institution for the Mangyan tribes in Mindoro island. With it’s beautiful bottle / packaging, it easily makes for a great gift to your favorite host or hostess.

Bottles are sold for P320 in supermarkets and Filipiniana (Kultura) stores nationwide.
Mead & Melomel by Nipa Foods

Nipa Foods’ mead is a light and sweet alcoholic drink made from honey sourced from bee farms in Laguna and Batangas. They carry different fruit wines from lipote to passion fruit to marang, but my top picks would be their passion fruit melomel (fruit-flavored honey wine) and mead (honey wine).

DESSERT

There’s always room for dessert, especially when they’re cholesterol-free and/or sweetened with coconut-sugar. Ever since I tried it, Kitchen Revolution‘s orange chocolate cake / cupcakes filled with orange buttercream and frosted with orange chocolate frosting, topped with candied orange peel have been on my mind!

You can also customize your own healthy, vegan cakes or cupcakes by picking a base flavor (chocolate or vanilla), and choosing a frosting flavor (vanilla, chocolate, salted caramel, strawberry, mocha). Cupcakes range from Php400-Php900 while 8-inch round cakes range from Php750-Php1500 depending on the number of cupcakes or layers and whether sweetened with coconut sugar and/or gluten-free.

Marie also offers low-guilt vegan ice cream made with coconut milk, soy milk, and sweetened with coconut sugar in yummy flavors like vanilla bean, dark chocolate, strawberry swirl, black sesame, salted caramel, vanilla cacao nib, chocolate toffee almond, peanut butter chocolate chunk, mangoes and cream, gingersnap cookie, Don Papa rum date walnut, and fudge brownie at Php375/pint.
